Barnes & Noble

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Barnes & Noble Book Fair!  It was such a wonderful community event and we had a special treat hearing from teachers read their favorite children's books.  Fifth Grade Chorus did an outstanding job of performing some of their favorite holiday songs for us as well.  Thank you everyone!

December 11-15 Spirit Week!! December SEL Spotlight (Social Emotional Learning)

The following five SEL competencies include suggestions for how families and school staff can support the development of skills at home and at school:

1 - Self-Awareness 2 - Self-Management 3 - Social Awareness 4 - Relationship Skills 5 - Responsible Decision-Making

During the month of December counselors will be teaching lessons to all grade levels that focus on relationship skills, specifically kindness and friendship. Families can support this effort by continuing the discussion at home.

Some great questions to ask to ask around the dinner table:

  • Tell me about someone who made you feel special today.
  • How did you make someone feel special today?
  • What makes someone a good friend?
  • Who is someone you admire at school and why?

Books to read at home that support the topic of friendship:

I Am Human by Susan Verde

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud

The Kindness Quilt by Nancy Wallace

How to Lose All Your Friends by Nancy Carlson

Making Friends is an Art by Julia Cook

Love Monster and the Last Chocolate by Rachel Bright

Jessica’s Box by Peter Carnavas

Louise and Andie: The Art of Friendship by Kelly Light

Classes will also be reviewing Zones of Regulation, which help kids identify their feelings and strategies.

6th Grade Cultural Thanksgiving Brunch

Last Tuesday, our 6th grade students shared presentations about their family heritage and cultures.  There were stories about families immigrating to America, stories about deceased loved ones, and heartfelt memories shared about students’ family culture and history.  Additionally, each student brought in a food item that was special to their family. Students and parents attending the event were provided the chance to sample the different foods and treats.  We love our rich diversity at GBW and thank you, 6th graders, for sharing your heritage and culture with us!

Turkey Trot

A Big Thank You to all of our students who participated in our annual Turkey Trot last week!  This event provided a great opportunity for students with and without disabilities to participate in a festive athletic competition / activity together as a GBW community.

Amazing Pandas

Please join us in congratulating our students who competed with their team, Tech Tigers, in a regional event at Osbourne Park High School in Manassas, Virginia on 11/19/23. Among the 37 teams participating, the Tech Tigers were chosen to compete at a state level competition hosted by James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA on December 10, 2023.

The Innovation Project presented by the Tech Tigers was Chess for the Blind. A huge thank you to Mrs. Webster and her team for providing the students with great feedback throughout the development process.

Congratulations!!  We are so Proud of you all!!

Social & Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.

The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

Beginning in early December, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For more information about the screener please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact your student’s school.

Principals' Message

We wanted to say a very special thank you to our GBW Veterans.  Last Friday, we hosted a special luncheon for our Veterans, and it was really special hearing about the awesome ways our GBW parents, guardians, and relatives have served our country.  We are so proud of our GBW Veterans, and we were honored to have you in our GBW family.  Also, a very special thank you to Texas Roadhouse (Chantilly) for supporting our Veterans in our community and generously donating all the food for this luncheon!

Special note to any GBW veterans we missed: This year we attempted to invite the Veterans listed in our student registration software, and we later realized  some families of veterans were not included. We apologize if you were not invited to this luncheon, and please email me at [email protected] so I can be sure to include you in our celebration next year scheduled for Friday, November 8th.

Thanksgiving Luncheon

Thank you to everyone who came out to join us for our Thanksgiving Luncheon yesterday!  The food was delicious, the family / community fellowship was fantastic, and the smiles were infectious!  Also, a special thank you to Lynne Dillon and our food service team for serving all 600 meals!

Young vs. Old Spirit Day

Please join the GBW Student Leadership Team in Young Vs. Old Spirit Day on Friday, November 17, 2023.  Students can dress as adults and adults can dress as students.  Show your school spirit by participating.  We’re so excited to see everyone’s creativity!

Principals' Corner

Dear GBW Families, at the end of 1st quarter you should be receiving a communication from your teachers inviting families to participate in a parent teacher conference to share progress from the 1st quarter.  In addition to the parent teacher conference, if you would like to schedule a conference with one of the principals, please know we are more than happy to meet with our families to discuss student progress, school programs, or school related questions or concerns.  Mr. Cook and I are eager to continue partnering with our families to help make Greenbriar West ES the best school it can be. Please let us know if you would like to schedule a meeting.

Attendance Letters Coming Soon

At the end of 2nd quarter, every family will receive an attendance email from Mr. Blount showing your child’s attendance records for the 1st quarter.  This email will be generated and sent to all families regardless of their attendance records.  The purpose of this attendance email is to raise awareness that Greenbriar West ES, Fairfax County Public Schools, and the Virginia Department of Education are all trying to improve our student attendance records.

Below is a sample of some of the language you can expect to see in Mr. Blount's attendance email:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Parent or Guardian,

As a school, GBW is sending attendance emails to all parents / guardians to inform families about the number of days students have been absent for the first quarter.  This is a routine part of our communications so we can inform parents how many days a child has been absent.  Receiving this email does not necessarily signal there are any problems with your child’s attendance, and please know all students will be receiving the exact same communication regardless of how many days a student is absent.

Here is some updated information about the number of absences for your child:

Child Name: _______________

Days Absent ______________

Percent of School Days missed: ___________

More information about Fairfax County attendance policies and resources can be found here:

Thank you and please let us know if your child or your family have any attendance questions or need any support related to attendance.

GBW Attendance Support Staff:

  • Principal: Andrew Blount
  • Assistant Principal: Jordan Cook
  • Social Worker: Emily Carleton

Science Olympiad 2023-24

Science Olympiad or "SO" is a 501(c)(3) organization which hosts team-based STEM competitions for elementary, middle, and high schools in all 50 states and DC. Tournaments are offered at regional, state and national levels.

Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets; schools form teams of students who can win awards in individual events, which later combine to form an overall team score qualifying the school for a higher level of tournament. Instead of events like the high jump and hurdles, though, a Science Olympiad tournament consists of events in a wide variety of STEM topics – everything from forensics to cryptography to antenna design. Some events entail demonstrating knowledge by taking a test, while others involve performing hands-on labs, or even designing and constructing a device.

Important Note: Teams will be formed with 2 kids for each event and either or both parents of the kids will be mentoring the kids in doing their event. Also, parents need to sign a permission slip for the student to take part in the regionals which we will send information out once the team is finalized. The Science Olympiad regional competition will be held sometime in February and our school team currently qualifies under Div B. Students can review the event description and rules using this link https://www.virginiaso.org/events-bc and make their choice.

All 5th and 6th grade students interested in participating in the Science Olympiad please fill out the google doc below:

Pandas in Action

At GBW, we are so proud of our specialists who help provide a very full and rich learning experience by providing students access to a variety of different disciplines not typically taught in the homeroom class.  This week, we wanted to highlight a few of our music and art teachers who are doing amazing work for our students every week. Thank you to Mrs. Giglio, Mrs. Hentz, Mrs. Fillers, and Mrs. Martin (shown in pictures from left to right) who have gone above and beyond to help make our specials truly special.

Mr. Blount and Mr. Cook

Inside the Classroom

Grades 4-6 began recorder instruction earlier in the 1st quarter. The recorder is a genuine musical instrument that can produce quality sound and is easy for every student to play.  In addition to the recorder being a valid instrument itself, it is also an excellent pre-band or pre-orchestra instrument.  It is used in the general music class with voices and in combination with other instruments.  It is a useful tool in teaching students to read music.  Thank you to our general music teachers (Mrs. Giglio and Mrs. Hentz) for helping to make music instruction so much fun!

Tree Plantings at GBW

Students last Friday had a chance to help plant eight new Redbud and Serviceberry Trees at Greenbriar West ES thanks to the Urban Forestry Division!  These trees were donated by by the Urban Forestry Division in a partnership with our school to help plant more trees in Fairfax County.  We are so grateful for our new trees and our students are so proud of our beautiful school grounds.  Ms. Landry's class helped to name this tree the "LanTree".

What Does My Child’s Progress Report Really Mean?

As we approach the end of the first grading period, it is important to know what your child’s progress report really means. Unlike in middle and high schools, the elementary progress report is designed to show families how students are progressing towards the mastery of a concept; grades are not meant to reflect a pass or fail. When students recieve 1’s and 2’s this simply means that they have not independently mastered the standards taught YET. It is important to know that some reporting categories are revisited multiple times over the course of the year, and may show mastery in one reporting category during a grading period but not another. This is because there are multiple standards within each reporting category. If ever you have questions, reach out to your teacher to schedule a conference to discuss further. To learn more about the FCPS Standards Based progress report, or to see what standards fall within a reporting category, please visit the FCPS ES Grading and Reporting Handbook.

✏️Panda's in Action

Dear GBW Families,

We have had a busy week here at GBW! On Monday, while students observed Indigenous People's Day, our staff engaged in an Equity Dialogue around ensuring equity practices in our classrooms. They had a chance to reflect on their practices and make plans to ensure all students have equitable access at GBW. Staff were able to enjoy lunch outside on our new deck in the courtyard! Thanks again to our 6th grade class last year for funding such an amazing project and to our Eagle Scout friend, Himneesh for building it.

We also welcomed students from Chantilly HS's STEP program this week. These students work as members of our staff to support students and teachers in tasks around the building. We are very excited to have them again this year.

Don't forget! Friday is Movie Night on the blacktop. We will have food trucks as well as concessions being sold by the 6th grade class (cash only). We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Thank you,

Mr. Blount & Mr. Cook

🧑‍💻Digital Citizenship Week
is Coming Up!

This year, spirit week will be October 16th-20th. Be on the look out in your child's Thursday folder for daily activities to do as a family to support healthy digital habits. Learn more about Common Sense Media's Digital Citizenship Programing.

This meeting is open to any parent wanting to learn more about full time screening; however, the meeting may be particularly beneficial for our second-grade parents as second grade is the first-year students could be screened for full time services.

✏️Panda's in Action

Dear GBW Families,

Towards the end of 1st quarter, you should receive communication from your teachers inviting families to participate in a parent teacher conference to share progress from the 1st quarter.  In addition to the parent teacher conference, if you would like to schedule a conference with one of the principals, please know that we are more than happy to meet with our families to discuss student progress, school programs, or school related questions or concerns.  Mr. Cook and I are eager to continue partnering with our families to help make Greenbriar West ES the best school it can be. Please let us know if you would like to schedule a meeting.

Monday was National Custodian Day! We want to take a moment to celebrate all the hard work of our amazing custodial staff. They ensure our students have a clean and safe space to learn and grow each day.  If you see them around, make sure to thank them for their dedication to our building.

Thank you,

Mr. Blount & Mr. Cook

Calendar Reminder

Monday, October 9th is a teacher work day. There is no school for students. We look forward to seeing our Pandas back in school on Tuesday, October 10th.

🥳So Much to Celebrate
in October!
LGBTQIA+ History Month

LGBTQIA+ History Month is recognized in October nationwide. We want to acknowledge and celebrate that LGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families are an integral component of our community and world!

National Principals Month

Each October, National Principals Month recognizes the essential role that principals play in making a school great. Principals are among the hardest working, yet often least recognized individuals in education. Principals set the academic tone for their schools, and it is their vision, dedication, and determination that provide the mobilizing force for achieving student success. We want to take a moment to thank Mr. Blount and Mr. Cook for their hard work and dedication to our GBW community!

National Bullying Prevention Month

We have made it through September, and what a wonderful September it was! Our students have wrapped up with Beginning of the Year assessments, and are hitting the ground running with their learning. Interims should be coming home for students with areas of growth this week, and teachers are working on scheduling First Quarter Conferences. If your teacher has not reached out to schedule this conference, be on the look out soon for this communication.

Don't forget to check out our October Events Calendar at the end of this message for all the great fall events we have this month!

🎒Attendance Matters

Did you know that missing even one day of school can result in students missing up to 120 minutes of reading and writing instruction? While it is important to keep students home when they are sick, making school attendance a priority is KEY to a child's academic success!

✏️Panda's in Action

It has been another amazing week at GBW! Our panda's continue to work on building their classroom communities, practicing their routines, and gain knowledge. Thank you to everyone that joined us at the Asha-Jyothi run last weekend and Chick Fil A night yesterday. We had a great turn out, and were able to raise a lot of money for our school. If you haven't already, follow us on Facebook to see Mr. Cook crossing the finish line! We were able to get 277 followers last year, our goal for this year is 500 by the end of the school year.

As a reminder, there is no school for students on Monday, September 25th as we observe the Yom Kippur holiday. Classes will resume as usual on Tuesday.

As always  we appreciate all the support for our GBW Community!

Mr. Blount and Mr. Cook

🌈Kindergarten Color Days

Tomorrow concludes our Kindergarten Color Days for this year! We have had a great time learning about and celebrating the different colors. Join us for Rainbow Day Friday, September 22nd.

Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections.  #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS. Week 2 is in the Books!

We are continuing to see our amazing pandas build routines and relationships this week! We couldn't be more proud of their hard work so far this year.

As a quick calendar reminder, there will be NO SCHOOL Friday, September 1st and Monday, September 4th as we celebrate the Labor Day holiday. We hope you are able to enjoy wrapping up the summer with friends and family. Classes will resume as normal on Tuesday, September 5th.

We also want to take a moment to highlight the Asha-Jothyi Fun Run. Asha-Jyothi (AJ) is a volunteer based non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the underprivileged by providing access to education and healthcare.  This year's Fun Run is September 17th at 8:00 a.m. at Fairfax Corner. To sign up, visit: https://asha-jyothi.redpodium.com/2023fairfax5k. Last year GBW was able to fundraise $2300 from this one event, and we are hoping to beat this fundraising goal this year!  Have fun, get some exercise, and help GBW!

Thank you for all you do to support our pandas and happy holiday weekend!

We are looking for coaches to come along side 4th-6th grades boys as they challenge some of the stereotypes of boys in our society. This is a twice-a-week commitment for just seven weeks!

🛟Out of the Darkness Walk

In an effort to build community between FCPS school-based mental health professionals, and to give back to our community, a team will participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk.

The Out of the Darkness walks are an opportunity to share stories and memories – to heal and provide hope for the future. This is a community cause, and a great opportunity to show support for those who have been impacted by suicide. The funds raised for the Fairfax Walk make it possible for AFSP to create, implement, and bring educational programs to schools, workplaces, and communities throughout the country. These programs help to create a culture that is smart about mental health by teaching the general public and reaching those who personally struggle and need to seek help.

Participation in this event, and fundraising are strictly voluntary. Families, colleagues and loved ones are welcome to join the FCPS team.
