Nomination Committee Needed!

The next school year seems far away - but we need your help for the

2025-26 PTA!

We are looking for 3 PTA members to serve on the nominating committee to help identify candidates for next year’s board.

Why should you consider supporting the GBW PTA in this role?

  • Do your kids love our PTA-sponsored after-school programs and events like Spelling Bee and the I Heart Panda Dance?
  • Do you know members of the Greenbriar community who you would trust to lead all of the great programs the PTA supports for the students and teachers?
  • Have you previously served on a board or a committee, but don't have the time for a long-term leadership role right now?
  • The committee will specifically look to recommend candidates for President, 2 VP positions, Treasurer, and Secretary.

You can help ensure the continued success of the PTA by volunteering for this committee with a minimal time commitment. No previous PTA leadership experience is necessary

Here is a rough timeline of upcoming related activities:

  • March 13:  Elect the nominating committee
  • March/April: Q&A with current PTA Board
  • April 22: Present nominees for 2025-26 PTA Board
  • May 29: Hold general membership election

All members of the nominating committee must be PTA members.

Main duties include helping solicit PTA board nominees, collecting nomination applications, and helping to present nominees for election.

Email [email protected] if you are interested in serving on the committee by March 9.

Don't Miss Out!! Last Week to Register for Let Me Run (Grades 4-6 Boys)

This is the last week to register for Let Me Run!

Designed to amplify confidence, self-expression, and respect for others, each practice includes a lesson from the Let Me Run curriculum that incorporates running, games, and activities. Each season culminates in a 5k race that celebrates the boys’ personal growth.

Registration at GBW is now open for boys in grades 4th-6th.

The Spring season starts on March 10th, meets Mondays and Thursdays before school starting at 7:45 AM, and ends with a 5k race on Saturday, May 3th.

Principal's Message:

Dear GBW,

We are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at this year's Spelling Bee! The competition was fierce, and we were incredibly impressed by the dedication and skill displayed by all participants.

After many rounds of challenging words, we are delighted to announce our top three spellers:

  • 1st Place: Dhruv S. (5th Grade)
  • 2nd Place: Aditya S, (5th Grade)
  • 3rd Place: Netra G. (6th Grade)

Please join us in congratulating Dhruv, Aditya, and Netra on their remarkable accomplishments! They demonstrated exceptional poise and mastery of the words they were asked to spell.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the students who participated, as well as to Mrs. Kiima Forshey and other PTA volunteers who helped make the Spelling Bee a success. Your support and encouragement are invaluable.

We are incredibly proud of our students' hard work and dedication. They truly embody the spirit of academic excellence.

Sincerely,

Mr. Blount and Mrs.Odom

Dr. Reid Visits Greenbriar West

Dear Greenbriar West Community,

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Superintendent Dr. Reid for taking the time to visit our school on Thursday, March 27th. It was a true honor to welcome Dr. Reid to Greenbriar West ES, where she had the opportunity to tour our facility, engage with our vibrant children, and observe the incredible work happening in our classrooms. Her enthusiasm for education and commitment to our community were evident as she interacted with students eager to share their learning experiences and showcase their projects.

Dr. Reid’s visit not only highlighted the dedicated efforts of our teachers and staff but also reinforced the importance of collaboration between our school and the district. We are grateful for her support and for spending time with our students, who truly enjoyed showcasing their achievements. We look forward to continuing this collaboration as we strive to provide the best educational experiences for our children. Thank you again, Dr. Reid, for your visit and for your ongoing commitment to our school community!

Sincerely,

The Greenbriar West Elementary School Team

Ramadan and Fasting Plans

Principal's Message:

Dear GBW,

Student Fasting Meal Kits for February 28 - March 28, 2025

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued a new, first-time waiver allowing students fasting during the school day from February 28 to March 28, 2025, to request take-home breakfast and lunch meal kits. Students may claim one breakfast and one lunch kit per day. If a student purchases breakfast or lunch at school, they cannot pick up a kit that day. Meal kits must be picked up by students at the end of the school day—adults cannot collect them. Parents or guardians must submit a weekly request form via the FCPS FNS website by the deadlines:

  • February 24, 2025, for February 28 and the week of March 3, 2025
  • March 3, 2025, for the week of March 10, 2025

  • March 17, 2025, for the week of March 24, 2025

FCPS 2024-2025 Standard School Year Calendar

Principal's Message:
  • FCPS Proposed Budget Progress

The Fairfax County School Board discussed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget at their work session on February 4. They discussed details regarding student enrollment and investments in students requiring additional support, market comparison data for surrounding school divisions, and an update on progress toward achieving the Baldrige Award for Performance Excellence. Baldrige is a framework used to assess and improve organizational performance across various sectors, including education.

The School Board also held a public hearing on the FY 2026 Proposed Budget on Tuesday, February 4, where they invited the community to share their feedback on the budget.

On Tuesday, February 18, the Fairfax County executive will present the county’s Advertised Budget, and the Fairfax County School Board will hold a work session on the FCPS FY 2026 Proposed Budget. View FCPS’ Budget Development Calendar.

  • Breaking Down the Budget

More than 85% of the budget is dedicated to instruction and reflects the needs of our community’s young people in response to the changing world around us. Budget priorities include providing competitive compensation for all employees, including a 7% salary increase for all staff. The majority of the budget increase is dedicated to that proposed 7% pay increase.

Our families want their children in high-quality schools with the best teachers who provide rigorous academic experiences. We must provide competitive compensation to attract and retain our outstanding educators, administrators, and other school-based and operational staff dedicated to the success of our students.

The proposed 7% salary increase would likely move FCPS to the highest starting salary for teachers with a master's degree among our neighboring counties and greatly improve our recruitment efforts amidst an ongoing teacher shortage. Visit the Budget webpage for more information.

Black History Month Celebration: Date Change

The event begins with a light reception followed by a formal program, From the Threads of Our Past to the Fabric of Our Future. The program will honor the enduring contributions of Black history and culture while envisioning a future rooted in equity and excellence. It will include inspiring performances, personal stories, reflections, and opportunities to connect and celebrate. The event is open to the entire community.

For more information, contact Nina Thomas, senior manager for Professional Learning and Cultural Responsiveness.

Twice a week for 7 weeks, trained volunteer coaches lead the team through practice. Designed to amplify confidence, self-expression, and respect for others, each practice includes a lesson from the Let Me Run curriculum that incorporates running, games, and activities. Each season culminates in a 5k race festival that celebrates the boys’ personal growth. Registration at GBW is now open for boys in grades 4th-6th. The Spring season starts on March 10th, meets Mondays and Thursdays before school starting at 7:45 AM, and ends with a 5k race on Saturday, May 3th. These clubs can happen at GBW thanks to volunteers like YOU!

Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences.

The 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection, and contribution. Girls learn specific skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions, and resolve conflict that they use at home, at school and with friends.

Registration at GBW is now open for girls in grades 3rd-6th.

The Spring season starts on March 3rd, meets Mondays and Wednesdays after school until 5:30pm, and ends with a 5k race in May. Visit gotrnova.org to learn more and register. Questions? Email [email protected].

2025-26 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2025, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2025, please complete this form and return it by January 31, 2025. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2025-2026 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at [email protected].  We thank you in advance for returning the form by January 31, 2025.

Online Registration for 2025-2026 School Year

We are excited to announce that Online Registration for the 2025-2026 school year will open on January 21, 2025. Both new and returning (re-enrolling) families can use our Online Registration (OLR) system to register students entering Kindergarten (00) through 12th grade for the upcoming academic year. Also starting this year the 2025-2026 packet includes an updated Pre-Kindergarten experience registration form. DIT is excited to now provide support for digital student registration across all grade levels in the OLR system, please encourage your incoming families to fill out the digital registration forms. The IT FASTeam will provide training for school staff on new features during the week of January 13.

The Welcome to Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Online Registration link will soon be available on your school's website. It will provide families with the information to utilize this convenient registration tool. Parents and guardians can still register students

Returning this Spring to GBW: Girls on the Run (Grades 3-6 Girls) Let Me Run (Grades 4-6 Boys)

These clubs can happen at GBW thanks to volunteers like YOU!

Both programs help students grow physically and socially. Students will run and complete lessons on things like why our words matter, the importance of friendships, and how to believe in ourselves. Both organizations are national non-profits and provide coach training, curriculum, and materials needed for lessons!

Let Me Run is a 7 week, 2x a week commitment, also in the spring, but exact dates to be determined.

Girls on the Run is a 10 week, 2x a week commitment, starting the week of March 3rd and ending mid-May.

Let Me Run will be held in the morning, and the committed coach is also flexible on the days of the week.

Girls on the Run has typically been in the afternoon, and the committed coach is flexible on what days of the week.

Find out more about these clubs by heading to gotrnova.org and letmerun.org, and email Site Coordinator Mary Beth Drum ([email protected]) to indicate the club in which you are interested.

Virginia's Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.
