Sixth Grade Sexual Harassment Lessons in January

Fairfax County Public Schools want to make sure everyone feels safe and respected at school. To support this priority, two lessons were developed for sixth graders about sexual harassment. These lessons teach what sexual harassment is and how to stop it from happening. Students will learn what to do if they or a friend are being bothered in this way. The lessons also explain how schools help students who are being harassed so they can feel comfortable learning again. School counselors teach these two lessons as part of their counseling curriculum in January 2025.

Parents and guardians may choose to opt their child out of the two sixth-grade lessons on the topic of sexual harassment. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative instruction. Every effort is made to foster respect for family choice. Students will be included in the two sexual harassment lessons unless a parent or guardian completes an opt-out form. Please complete this opt-out form by January 6, 2025.

Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions 6th Grade

Our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. We will survey students in grades 6, as well as classroom instructors and staff, beginning in January 2025. The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.

The student survey will be completed between January 6-February 28, 2025. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous. No one, including teachers and administrators, will know how your child answered the survey questions. You will not have access to your child’s survey answers. You may preview the questions asked in the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurveyDCJS .

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Please note that there are questions about topics that may be sensitive to some, including questions about bullying, mental health, and suicide. This is a great time to talk to your child about these important issues. For guidance and more resources on these topics, please see https://tinyurl.com/MentalHealthdcjs or  https://tinyurl.com/VDOEstudentservices.

All students in your child’s grade level are eligible to participate in the survey. The survey is voluntary, and you and/or your child can decide they prefer not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please complete this form by December 20, 2024.

The Virginia School Survey results are provided to the school around the end of the school year.  You can find survey results for your school and division here: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey. The results are used by the school, the division, and the state to identify strengths and to address relevant needs to improve learning environments for your child as well as students across the state.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of Virginia’s schools.

Rooted in Kindness”

Due Date:  January 24, 2025

  • Submit your artwork on a standard 8 ½” x 11” sheet of printer paper.
  • Extend your artwork all the way to the edge of the paper. No white border
  • The artwork must include the following: “Greenbriar West Elementary”, “2024-2025” and the theme “Growing Knowledge, Rooted in Kindness” in bold, clear, and neatly done lettering.
  • All TEXT must be kept within the 7 ¾” x 10” interior parameter of the paper. This includes your name.
  • Write your name neatly in the lower right corner (within the interior parameter).
  • Complete the entry form at the bottom of this flyer and attach it to the back of your artwork.

You can use markers, crayons, paint, or colored pencils, but outline your letters and images in black, like a coloring book, so that they stand out.  Bold and bright colors work best; light, soft colors do not always print well.  No 3-D artwork.

Mrs. Giglio Retiring after 31 years

Dear GBW,

Mrs. Odom and I are writing to share that Bene Giglio will be retiring from Greenbriar West ES and Fairfax County Public Schools on Friday, December 20, 2024.  Mrs. Giglio has proudly served our GBW community for 24 years and has worked for FCPS for 31 years.  Mrs. Giglio, it has been inspiring to see your passion, excitement, and love for our students and love for music.  The way you share your love of music with our students has helped countless students to discover their own musical talents and joy in performing music for audiences.  Over the years, you have encouraged countless young musicians to discover their musical talents in ways that will last them a lifetime.  You have been our students' best advocate to help modify our musical instruction and instruments in ways so that our students with physical disabilities can still experience the same joy that others experience in music.  And best of all you have loved our students in special ways so that every student has felt seen, heard, and loved as a valuable member of our GBW family.  We thank you for your service to our GBW students, staff, and community and we wish you the best in this next chapter of your life.

Parents, below is a picture of Mrs. Giglio's Commitments that she has posted outside of her classroom.  Dear Mrs. Giglio- Mrs. Odom and I are honored to have served collaboratively with you, and we thank you for living up to your heartfelt commitments shown below.  You will be dearly missed by our students, staff, and our GBW Family.

Sincerely, Mr. Blount and Mrs. Odom

Dear GBW,

Today was a wonderful day as we invited families in for a family meal at our annual GBW Thanksgiving Luncheon.  On behalf of our GBW staff, we want to thank our families for your strong support of Greenbriar West ES.  Your partnership is essential in creating a positive and enriching learning environment for our students.  Today, the luncheon was filled with laughter, smiles, and joy.  We appreciate everyone helping to make this a special community event.

Thursday, November 21:  GBW Thanksgiving Lunch

November 27-29: Thanksgiving Holiday -- School Closed

Principal's Message: Veterans' Day Luncheon and Parade

Greenbriar West Elementary School recently hosted a special Veterans Day luncheon on Friday, November 8th to honor our military-connected families. Over 20 families gathered to enjoy a catered meal provided by local businesses: Olive Garden, Buffalo Wing Factory, Texas Roadhouse, and Wegmans.

Following the luncheon, a parade was held to celebrate these families. Students lined the halls with American Flags to cheer and show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by their military connected friends and their loved ones.

The school community is proud to have representation from all six branches of the U.S. military. Among the military spouses and Blue Star moms on staff, Greenbriar West is home to Office Assistant, Sally Bippert veteran Coast Guard Officer and 2nd-grade teacher Daphne Clarence, who came to us as a career switcher and is a recent Air Force retiree.

Military Family Liaison Katie Belyea-Musitani played a crucial role in organizing the event. Her dedication to supporting military families is invaluable.

The school hopes this event fostered a sense of community and pride among its military-connected families.

FAIRFAX COUNTY YOUTH SURVEY

6th GRADE STUDENTS

November 14, 2024

The Fairfax County Youth Survey, a collaboration between the Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is a comprehensive, anonymous, and voluntary survey given each year to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The survey examines behaviors, experiences, and other factors that influence the health and well-being of Fairfax County's youth. The results, published each year at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/youthsurvey, identify trends and areas of need, providing a snapshot of the county's youth and serving as a barometer of the community's effectiveness in fostering healthy choices in young people

Greenbriar West ES will be administering the Fairfax County Youth Survey on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 9:30am.

While it is our hope that as many students as possible will participate, if you do not wish for your child to take part in the Youth Survey, please complete the form linked here and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 1, 2024. If you have already opted your child out of this survey using the Parent Digital Consent (fcps.edu) you do not need to provide additional information to the school counselor.

Safety Reminders from the Principals

Dear Families,

We are constantly reviewing our safety protocols to see if we can improve any of our school practices to improve students safety.  As such, we have a few safety reminders to share.

Safety Reminders:

  1. During arrival and dismissal, when approaching Greenbriar West on Poplar Tree Road from Stringfellow Road, do not turn left into the parking lot. Please drive past the school, turn left on Plaza Lane, and join the Kiss ‘n Ride (K&R) line. Follow the red directional arrows shown in image below.
  2. During arrival and dismissal, parents are not permitted to park in the bus loop. Instead, they must use the K&R line to drop off or pick up students.  If you need to check into the building or check a student out early at times close to arrival / dismissal, park in our parking lot nearest door #8.
  3. When leaving the GBW K&R line during arrival / dismissal, there is no left turn allowed out of our parking lot from the K&R line as is reinforced by the traffic sign showing “Right Turn Only”. Follow the yellow directional arrows shown in image below.
  4. Please do not park in our handicapped parking spaces unless you have a VDOT issued handicapped parking pass.  We have students with physical disabilities that require access to these spaces during arrival and dismissal.
  5. Parents & Guardians are reminded that they must ring the buzzer at Door #1 to enter our building with a valid government issued ID. Parents and Guardians are not permitted to enter our building through any other entrance.

Thank you again families for helping to keep our students safe and our Kiss N' Ride line moving efficiently.

Mr. Blount and Mrs. Odom

  • Please ensure you are wearing the “visitor” sticker throughout the duration of your visit.
  • After signing in, please go directly to your assigned meeting location.
  • We ask that you only attend the classrooms that you are scheduled for a conference / meeting for that day. If you have multiple student conferences, please go directly to and from each classroom.
  • If you prefer to visit another one of your student’s teachers or former teachers, please schedule a meeting with that teacher.
  • After your conference, please return to the Main Office to check-out using your sticker.
  • ***Please note we will be using these same visitor safety check-in procedures for all workdays including (school days, teacher workdays, school planning days, and staff development days).
