Dear GBW Families,

As we wrap up the 2021-2022 school year I wanted to send one last News You Choose message to thank you for such a successful school year.  We also wanted to say a formal thank you and farewell message to our staff leaving GBW.

Thank You GBW Students

Our students worked hard this year as we returned to in-person instruction for 5 days a week.  We faced many challenges this year with the COVID isolation and quarantining procedures that were frequently updated from month to month.  We also had to work twice as hard to make up for the learning loss that occurred during our virtual learning.  It was so nice to return to in-person learning where students learn best, surrounded by their peers and face-to-face with their teachers.  Students, we saw how hard you worked this year on all of your classwork assignments, homework, projects, performances, and tests.  We are so proud of every one of you for an amazing school year.

Thank you GBW Community

Thank you GBW Community for helping us to celebrate the 50th Year Anniversary of GBW as we celebrated 50 years of excellence that started back in 1972 with Don Carrol as our first principal.  The 50th Year Birthday Bash, the special guest speakers, and the time capsule that was prepared for our lobby helped us to commemorate this special occasion.  As I shared at our birthday bash, GBW has a long history of collaboration, a fierce love of learning, a commitment towards inclusion, and a love of community that closely resembles a family.  Our community has worked hard over the years to create this strong GBW family and we are so proud to be a part of this amazing family.

Thank you GBW Staff

As we embark on the next 50 years of excellence for GBW, I am so proud to work alongside such amazing and talented teachers and staff.  At a recent interview with a new prospective teacher, the applicant asked me what I was most proud of at GBW.  I quickly shared that it was our teachers and staff.  GBW was able to have one of our highest performing years this year despite all of the learning challenges faced with the pandemic.  Our test scores, student programming, and services provided to students were simply amazing.  I give all the credit to our amazingly talented teachers and staff.  They stayed long hours, worked hard through professional development to improve their practices, and always held themselves and our students accountable to high expectations.  But most importantly, our staff loved our students in a special way so that every student felt important, respected, safe, and included as a member of our loving GBW family.  Staff- thank you for the way you loved our students, staff, and community this year.  We are so grateful for each and every one of you.

New Beginnings for GBW Staff

As we close the 2021-2022 school year, I want to pause and say a very special thank you to the Greenbriar West ES staff who will be leaving us this year to embark on a new journey.  These fine staff have worked hard to serve our students and our community and we wish them well as they start a new chapter in their professional careers.

Rosalyn Crews (1st Grade Teacher)

Roz has been teaching with FCPS for 13 years, teaching with GBW for 1 year, and has accepted a music teaching position at Westlawn Elementary School for the 2022-2023 school year. Roz will be missed for her gentle, caring demeanor. She was a collaborator who quickly learned the ropes here at GBW upon her hire in the fall. While we are excited for her new journey, we will sorely miss her expertise and kindness!

Melanie Dorsey (3rd Grade Teacher)

Melanie has worked for GBW for 6 years, and will now be moving on from teaching to serve as a professional learning specialist for Amplify Math 6-8 (soon to be Amplify Math + Desmos Classroom). We will miss Melanie’s knowledge and instructional expertise, especially in the area of mathematics. Her classroom routines and structures were top notch. We wish Melanie the best of luck in her new adventure!

Sarah Francis (6th Grade AAP / Level IV Teacher)

Sarah has taught 10 years in FCPS and 3 of those years here at GBW.  Next year Sarah will have the opportunity to continue teaching her favorite subject of mathematics nearby at Franklin Middle School. Sarah was a positive team-player who managed to enrich instructional experiences for all her students. Good luck Sarah!

Amy Krejcar (6th Grade Teacher)

Amy has taught at GBW for 10 years and for 25 years in FCPS.  Next year Amy will be teaching Grade 6 Level IV at Poplar Tree Elementary School.  Amy had a warm, caring spirit that translated into a positive classroom culture. She was a caring team-player who wanted the best for her students. She will continue to do great work in FCPS!

James Michelucci (Physical Education Teacher)

James has been at GBW for 2 years, and he will continue teaching Physical Education in Baltimore County Public Schools. Although James only served as a teacher for 2 years, his work was that of a seasoned veteran. He built and maintained positive relationships with students while teaching them all how to be healthier individuals. James will continue to do great work in the education field!

Kim Picinich (Psychologist)

Kim has worked at Greenbriar West for 3 years and for FCPS for 19 years.  Kim will continue to work for FCPS as a psychologist providing services and support for a variety of schools within the county. Kim had an incredibly kind and approachable personality. She communicated with everyone in the most genuine and professional manner. We will miss her caring dedication to our students, staff, and families!

Lisa Prillaman (School Based Technology Specialist- SBTS)

Lisa has worked at GBW for 4 years and 21 years in FCPS.  Next year Lisa will continue her work as a School Based Technology Specialist at Oak Hill Elementary School. Lisa always had upbeat, positive interactions with colleagues and students. Lisa’s knowledge and professionalism served our students and staff members amazingly. She was a pleasure to work with and learn from here at GBW!

Rachel Taormina (1st Grade Teacher)

Rachel has worked at GBW for the last 7 years. She will continue teaching next year in Prince William County as a 1st grade teacher at Piney Branch Elementary School. Her calm demeanor and dedication to her work will be greatly missed. We know she will continue to have a positive impact on students and families!

GBW Retirees

We frequently refer to GBW as a family, and these special staff members truly are family members of our GBW family.  We are so grateful for their heartfelt commitment, dedication, and service to GBW over the years.  These retirees have given so much of their time, energy, resources, and professional careers towards serving our GBW community.  We will miss seeing you daily in our halls and we hope you will frequently come back to visit us.

Meri Aanstoos (Special Education Teacher)

Meri has dedicated the last 20 years of her professional career working at GBW.  Meri will be retiring into the sunset as she plans to move close to the beach with her husband. We will miss Meri’s positive spirit, smile, and sense of humor. Meri’s work ethic was unmatched, and she had a special way of supporting students with complex learning needs to ensure that all students were successful.

Cindy Dall (Administrative Assistant)

Cindy has served GBW for 21 years and has truly been the backbone of GBW. She’s been described as the glue that holds our school community together. We will truly miss her knowledge, skills, and dedication to our students, staff, and families. Even more so, we will miss her kind, gentle nature.  Her commitment to GBW and our community has had such a tremendous positive impact over the years and we are so excited for her to enjoy her well-deserved retirement.

Andrea Knippler (Instructional Assistant)

Andrea has worked for FCPS for 17 years, and 4 of those years were here at GBW.  Andrea will continue to work with children at a pre-school, the same pre-school she started her career in education. We will miss Andrea’s can-do attitude, sense of humor, and willingness to do whatever it takes for our students. Andrea has a servant heart that is full of humility.  She has served in so many capacities to help our community through a challenging pandemic, and we owe her a thousand thank-you’s that cannot easily be expressed in words.  Andrea, we have been inspired by your servant heart to love our students and our community.

Catherine Schmitt (Office Assistant)

Catherine has worked for FCPS for 18 years and 13 of those years were here at GBW.  Catherine will be moving to Richmond, VA, so she can be closer to family. We will miss Catherine’s ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and families.  She had a special gift for making every small conversation with students into a life changing conversation.  Catherine had countless informal student mentees in GBW, and she saw every conversation as an opportunity to express her genuine attention and care.

Rita Updike (Special Education Instructional Assistant)

Rita has worked at GBW for the past 18 years.  Rita looks forward to a more relaxed pace of life where she can enjoy a long list of tourist attractions.  We will miss Rita’s cheerful, calm presence. She was truly dedicated to our students. Rita was reliable and always went above and beyond to ensure our students’ needs were met.

We love our teachers at GBW and want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of our instructional staff.  Each day, we see amazing examples of their dedication to students, families, and school.  They go above and beyond in so many ways, and we couldn’t have more “Panda Pride” for all that they do. Many of our staff work long hours in the evenings, on weekends, and even on vacation days to prepare instructional activities for our students.  It is thanks to their hard work and dedication that we continue to be one of the top schools in FCPS year after year.  Teachers - thank you again for all you do to ensure that every student at GBW succeeds!

And to our fabulous PTA and parents, thank you for an incredible week full of delicious food to celebrate our teachers and staff.  Thank you so much for your show of support.  We felt very loved and appreciated this week, and we are all very thankful to partner with you in the education of our students!

Last night at Chantilly High School, our art teachers, Amanda Martin and Erin Fillers, created a few displays of our very own GBW students’ artwork as part of the Chantilly Pyramid Art Show. Many families came to the event to celebrate our students’ talents and creativity. Great job to our students and art teachers! We are so proud!

2. Earth Day Tomorrow is Earth Day - Wear Green!

All GBW Students are encourgaged to wear a green shirt on Earth Day.

The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970, when 20 million people across America celebrated by filling their local streets, parks and auditoriums to demand a healthy, sustainable environment.  Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated around the world, by people from all walks of life who are concerned about making a sustainable future for their children.

4. News from PE

Did you know students are learning to bike in Physical Education? Biking is a great activity that we encourage students to learn and participate in.  Biking is a great activity for both young and old, and thus is a great way to stay active throughout your lifetime.  It is also a great way to have fun with friends and family.

During Physical Education 4-6 grade students learned the ABC bike check.  Including how to check their bicycles tire (air) pressure, examine their brakes, and check the chain before riding.  We also learned the 2-2-2 helmet safety check and how to wear a helmet properly for their safety.

During our riding we explored different stations that worked on turning, biking hand signals, trail riding (going over bumps), and students had the opportunity to try and ride over our ramp.  The weather couldn’t have been better and we look forward to biking more this year.

On Tuesday our GBW students helped plant 8 trees donated by the Urban Forestry Division of Fairfax County.  There were 6 new River Birch Trees planted around the front of GBW, and 2 Willow Oak trees planted by the side parking lot.  It was a beautiful day for planting and to learn the benefits of tree planting for the environment.

Thank you again to the Urban Forestry Division for this generous donation and to Hugh Whitehead for helping our students to plant these beautiful trees!

2. Purple Up! Day April Is Month of the Military Child; Purple Up! Day is April 20

April is the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take the opportunity to recognize military-connected youth for their service and contribution to our community. Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to have over 14,000 military-connected youth as a part of our student body. We appreciate the varied life experiences they bring to our school community, and recognize their strength and resilience.

To show our support, we are inviting all students, families, and staff to WEAR PURPLE on April 20 to support our military families.

Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

GBW's 50th Birthday Bash Message from the Principal

Saturday was a very special day for our community.  We shared a lot of interesting facts about what our country, community, and GBW looked like over 50 years ago.  We also had so many special guests attend, which made this event even more meaningful and memorable.

For those of you that missed the event, here are a few highlights:

I shared the following quick facts about 1972:

  1. History: President was Richard Nixon and the Watergate Scandal was just starting.
  2. Culture: Popular Movie was “The God Father” and a popular song was “American Pie”.
  3. Money: Average Family Income was $12,000, average home sold in Greenbriar for $33,000, and the typical cost to attend a GBW event was 12 pencils!
  4. GBW: First Principal of Greenbriar West ES (Don Carroll) opened our doors on March 27th, 1972 with 615 students enrolled.

Our Special Guests on Saturday:

  1. Cub Scout Pack 1133 - Thank you for leading our school in the Pledge of Allegiance.
  2. Former Principals - Thank you to our former principals who came to speak at the event on Saturday: Patty Granada, Lauryn Campbell, Lori Cleveland, and John Hilkert.  The principals shown on stage on Saturday help to represent the leadership of GBW dating all the way back to 1999!
  3. Stella Pekarsksy - Thank you for attending on Saturday to share some heartfelt words about your rich history of supporting GBW over the years as a parent, PTA president, and board member representing the Sully District.
  4. Becky Baenig and Dr. Terri Edmunds-Heard - Came to show their support on behalf of the FCPS Region 5 Assistant Superintendent’s Office.  We have always felt so loved and supported by the county, and Region 5 continued to show their support at this event.
  5. Supervisor Pat Herrity - Thank you Supervisor Herrity for coming to show your support of GBW as well as the presentation of the memorial plaque you presented to our school.
  6. GBW Alumni Staff - Thank you to the group of teachers who attended from the original teaching staff back in 1972!  It was so great to hear your special stories and memories about GBW!

During our ceremony, I shared the following GBW traits that have helped to define the legacy of our school over the years:

  1. Collaboration - Collaboration with the local government, collaboration with surrounding schools, collaboration with our parents / community, and teacher collaboration within our school.
  2. Fierce Love of Learning - I shared countless examples of our fierce pursuit of academic learning and competitions (math competitions, spelling bees, geography bees, etc).  I also shared numerous examples of our fierce love of the performing arts (band, strings, chorus, talent shows, art competitions, reflection contests, etc).
  3. Long History of Inclusion - GBW has a long history of including all students.  Just 2 years ago, we furthered our commitment to inclusion as we welcomed more of our students with disabilities to join their neighborhood school by expanding our programming to include an ID / IDS classroom.
  4. Community - GBW has always been a “community” in that we love our students, staff, and community in a special way that “feels like” a big happy family.  We have a long history of volunteerism, community events, and have prided ourselves in creating a strong community that is bound together by our love.

In summary, GBW is such a special school and center of our Greenbriar community.  As a principal, I was bursting with pride that I have the privilege and honor to serve in such an amazing school.  As I shared on Saturday, I will continue to uphold my 3 promises to the GBW community: 1) love our students, staff, & community; 2) hold our students, staff, and myself accountable to very high standards, & 3) continue to spread joy in our community by ensuring that learning is fun and community events continue to spread joy.

3. Help Us Help Others

Did you know that 5% of the food that feeds children in our area comes from food drives just like ours?  Our food drive is very important in our community and helps to feed children in the area!

As a result, we are very proud of our student participation in the Leadership Team Food Drive, which is taking place from April 11 to May 13.  All donations will be delivered to the Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, a local outreach center that manages a food pantry for the local Fairfax community.  They are incredibly appreciative of the work we are doing and would like GBW to know how much our commitment to servicing the community makes a difference in the lives of others.  Donations must be non-perishable food and no glass.  Our goal is to reach 1000 items!

Food Drive Schedule:

MATHCOUNTS

A recognized nationwide school competition where students in grade 6-8 get the opportunity to compete in live contests against and alongside their peers. A rigorous selection process was conducted among the GBW MathClub enrolled students (5th & 6th graders), and a team of 12 Mathletes from 6th grade were selected to compete at the Fairfax Chapter.

We are happy to let you know that GBW Mathletes had a great performance at the 2022 Fairfax Chapter level competing with Middle Schoolers, and few of these Mathletes have performed incredibly well and will be moving on to participate in the State Level competition on March 31.

Outstanding achievements from this year’s MathCounts:

  • Nathan Park - Ranks in the top 25% in the Fairfax Chapter!

Mathletes from 6th grade advancing to the State round to compete individually:

  • Nathan Park
  • Prajeet Mishra
  • Siddharth Surapaneni

This GBW MathCounts team was coached by Amruta Rajeev & Supreet Mishra. 6th grade team was also coached by Suhas and Shreyas for other Math Competitions.

Few of these coaches are GBW Alumni & current TJHSST/Chantilly High School students and it is their way of giving back to the community by helping GBW.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a school's team based competition for students from third grade through their senior year in high school. It offers students the opportunity to work in teams of 2 or 3 towards a STEM topic to demonstrate the knowledge and build device per the defined rules. This helps students to improve their understanding in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to work together in teams to learn new skills. Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO) is a non-profit organization engaging and challenging students in these disciplines through team-based competitive tournaments in Virginia.

GBW's team with 15 students (from 5th & 6th grades) competed in the Division B (Middle School Division) of Regional Science Olympiad, which was conducted on January 22nd (Written events) and February 12th (Building events). The GBW team was built in a very short time and the team's performance was remarkable as they were one place away from qualifying for the VASO State Championship. GBW was placed 13th overall of the 30 teams, the majority of them being the Middle school teams.

Here are our proud achievements (out of 30 teams):  Thanks to PTA for sponsoring for this event.

GBW's Spelling Bee was conducted on February 23rd . It was supported by school teachers and sponsored by PTA
