FCPS Curriculum Quarterly Overviews

Dear GBW Families,

Some families have asked for more detailed information on the curriculum that we are using in FCPS, and I wanted to share the front facing FCPS website that includes our curriculum and pacing guides.  Pacing is the how and when teachers teach the standards. Each school division creates its own pacing. These pacing overviews are examples of how and when teachers organize and teach the curriculum. They are organized by quarter and by week.

In FCPS and at GBW, our teacher teams may adjust the pacing or order of units to best meet the needs of students.

FCPS Curriculum Quarterly Overview Website: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/curriculum

Thank you,

Mr. Blount and Mrs. Odom

Principals

Digital Citizenship Spirit Week

October 14-18 is Digital Citizenship Week at GBW! Our students and staff will be learning and reflecting on the questions you see here throughout the week!  We are proud to introduce the Digital Citizens, who remind us how to be smart, safe, and kind online.  Watch for family materials to be sent home so you can continue the learning each day after school with your student. We will be celebrating with the following Spirit days as well! Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram for reminders.

Friday October 11th:

PJ Day! Digital Detox

We’re at our best, when we rest…so take a digital break this weekend and let’s wear Pajamas to celebrate the start of Dig Cit Week!

Tuesday October 15th:

When online, we learn and play,

But offline, we must find a way

To balance our time, with something new

So wear something that shows what you do!

Wednesday October 16th:

CAUTION Good Choices Ahead: Wearing yellow bold and bright, just like the middle stop sign light Helps us remember what to do with online dangers, old and new!

Thursday October 17th:

Standing Up to Cyber Bullying:

As good Dig Cit’s it’s important to know,

We can stand up to bullying wherever we go .

Lace up your shoes, throw on your sweats,

standing up to cyberbullying is the best idea yet!

Friday October 18th:

Awesome Sock Day!

Sock-cessfully Secure Your Digital Footprint: We leave tracks when we travel online, So let’s rock awesome socks and wrap up Dig Cit Week feeling fine!

Community Digital Inclusion Opportunities:

Schools are asked to help share community-based opportunities for digital connectivity and digital literacy learning.  On the Digital Equity and Inclusion website, families can learn how to:

1. Find Free Wi-Fi

2. Borrow a Computer

3. Visit Fairfax Access Locations

4. Take Free Tech Classes

5. Sign up for an ACP Internet Discount

As a reminder, schools and families can access the Media Balance and Wellbeing Toolkit   to support the healthy use of technology. FCPS will continue leading efforts to promote a positive culture of media and technology use, supporting both students and their families.

FAIRFAX COUNTY YOUTH SURVEY

6th GRADE STUDENTS

November 14, 2024

The Fairfax County Youth Survey, a collaboration between the Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is a comprehensive, anonymous, and voluntary survey given each year to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The survey examines behaviors, experiences, and other factors that influence the health and well-being of Fairfax County's youth. The results, published each year at https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/youthsurvey, identify trends and areas of need, providing a snapshot of the county's youth and serving as a barometer of the community's effectiveness in fostering healthy choices in young people

Greenbriar West ES will be administering the Fairfax County Youth Survey on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 9:30am.

While it is our hope that as many students as possible will participate, if you do not wish for your child to take part in the Youth Survey, please complete the form linked here and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 1, 2024. If you have already opted your child out of this survey using the Parent Digital Consent (fcps.edu) you do not need to provide additional information to the school counselor.

Principal's Message Cell Phone Policy

FCPS' cell phone expectations for students help foster engagement, learning, and positive social behavior in the classroom.

We encourage families to talk to their student about the FCPS cell phone policy and support their student by:

  • Contacting the school’s front office (rather than the student directly) if there is a family emergency.
  • Only communicating about non-urgent matters before or after the school day.
  • Waiting to respond to non-urgent texts from students until the school day is over.

The usage policies below apply to all FCPS students, with the exception of schools participating in the school year 2024-25 cell phone storage pilot program. More information on the storage pilot program can be found here.

  • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.
  • With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.
Most Important to Note Regarding Smart Watches
  • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.

Principal's Message Attendance Matters

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Regular attendance is crucial for the academic success of all students. Studies have repeatedly proven that students with better attendance records perform better in school and are more likely to graduate high school on time.

Did you know?

  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10% (or about 2 days per month) can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Attending school even if your student arrives late is valuable for their academic success.

I understand that there may be obstacles preventing students from attending school regularly, such as illness or personal circumstances. That’s why it is so important for our school team to work together with our students and families to remove any barriers. We all belong here!

Please encourage your student to arrive on time every day and maintain regular attendance until the last day of school. Together, we can work toward increasing school attendance rates and improving academic outcomes for all our students.

How You Can Help:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind that complaints of a stomachache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

Let's start the school year strong!

Sincerely,

Mr. Blount, Mrs. Odom, GBW Wellness Team

From September 15 to October 15, FCPS recognizes and celebrates the histories and cultures of the members of our community who trace their heritage to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections. Please help us welcome our military families during Blue Star Welcome Week, September 21 - September 29, 2024, and throughout the year! #BlueStarWelcomeWeekFCPS

Advanced Academics

We invite you to attend a parent information session on Tuesday, September 24th, from 6:00-7:00 PM in the school gym. This meeting will cover the continuum of advanced academic services available in FCPS, as well as details about the full-time screening process.

This session is particularly relevant for parents of second graders and those new to the county, providing a valuable opportunity to understand the advanced academic options and how they may apply to students identified as needing them. We encourage all interested parents to attend for a clearer understanding of these educational services.

Below is the Fall AAP newsletter that includes information about AAP services, ability testing, screening, and the annual parent referral deadline for Full-Time AAP services.

Are you a 5th or 6th grader interested in making decisions for the school?

The Student Leadership Team has the opportunity to meet once a month to help make decisions that affect the entire school community. This includes picking spirit days, voting on assemblies, creating ideas for community events, decorating the school showcases, and more. This a great opportunity to make your student voice heard! If your student is interested in being on the Student Leadership Team, please sign them up here.

Seeking Coaches for Let Me Run

We are hoping to hold a Let Me Run club this fall at GBW, in the morning before school. We need volunteers (being an avid runner is NOT a requirement!) to coach either once or twice a week to make it happen!

Let Me Run is building a new generation of men by teaching boys to be their best selves through a character development program powered by running. 4th-6th grade boys will run and complete lessons on things like expressing emotions, showing affection, building friendships, and connecting with others. LMR is national non-profit that provides coach training, curriculum, and materials needed for lessons! Contact Site Liaison Mary Beth Drum [email protected] to sign up, for just seven weeks starting late September
