3. 2022-2023 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2022, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2022, please complete this form and return it no later than February 4, 2022. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2022-2023 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at [email protected]. We thank you in advance for returning the form no later than February 4, 2022.

4. Student Technology Update

FCPS is committed to maintaining in-person learning for the remainder of this school year. However, since we are beyond our first five snow days we need to be proactive and prepare for any number of school or class closures or virtual learning scenarios, should events require this on short notice.

To make sure student laptops are ready for home use please assist your child in performing these readiness steps to ensure their devices and accounts are functioning properly on your home network.

At Home - Technology Readiness Steps for Students

  1. Find a location for charging your laptop when you have it at home.  Ideally this is close to where a student keeps their backpack so they can remember to pack it for in person school days.
  2. Log onto your laptop with your student ID and password.
  3. Connect your laptop to your home internet connection.
  4. Login to Google account.  In the Chrome browser, go to www.fcpsschools.net, sign in with your fcpsschools.net account.
  5. Log into Schoology. Make sure you can access your courses.
  6. If you have any issues with these steps from home, go to the Tech Support for Families page for Help Documents or to submit a ticket for support.

Click here for a printable version of the readiness steps.

Students in grades 2 through 6 will be expected to take their laptops home with them each night, charge them overnight, and return with them to school in the morning fully charged. Teachers in grades K-1 will communicate their plan with families around sending laptops home.

If your family does not have internet access in your home, you may request a MiFi device for your student by contacting our school counselors- Anne Flannagan ([email protected]) and Megan McAndrew ([email protected])  The MiFi will allow your child to connect the FCPS laptop to the internet for learning.  The MiFi is filtered to block harmful or inappropriate websites.

Read-a-thon is Coming Soon!

Read-a-thons get your reader excited about reading and it gives friends and family the opportunity to encourage your child to read even more.

GBW’s Read-a-thon starts Monday, February 7, 2022.

About one week before our Read-a-thon starts, we will send home instructions on how to activate your reader's personal page. This is where you will be able to view and record their progress.

We encourage you to activate your reader’s account today by clicking on:  https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/MaWVyX/1 and following the simple instructions.  Enter your student’s first name only.

We've chosen Read-a-thon because it will not take much of your time, gives your child a reason to read and helps in the development of stronger reading skills. The funds raised will go toward more outdoor enhancements to our school as well as the 50th Birthday Bash on March 26!

What to Expect on a Virtual Learning Inclement Weather Day

Dear GBW Families,

As we prepare to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, we are also monitoring the forecast, which indicates the chance for inclement weather Sunday and Monday. Please take a few minutes before the weekend to prepare for the possibility of an inclement weather virtual learning day. Inclement weather virtual learning days will be announced in the same ways that we make all emergency weather announcements, which are posted to the web, text and email, social media, Red Apple 21 and through the local media. Information on how FCPS makes weather decisions is available online.

How Students and Staff Should Prepare for Inclement Weather and Virtual Learning

  • Students and staff should take their devices home Friday, January 14, and be sure the device is charged ahead of the start of the school day on Tuesday, January 18. If your child is currently isolating or quarantining and needs to pick up a device from the school to engage in virtual learning should that occur next week, please contact your school directly by noon Friday.
  • Review the Student Technology Readiness Checklist with your child and complete all the at-home readiness steps.
  • Read any messages from your school or teacher to know what to expect.
  • Make plans for childcare if needed.

What to Expect on a Virtual Learning Inclement Weather Day

Virtual learning will be synchronous or live, teacher-led instruction. However, teachers may prepare emergency asynchronous lessons that can be used if they have issues connecting due to power or other unforeseen circumstances.

The Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Day Schedule will be utilized.

  • ALL Elementary Schools will begin at 10:30 a.m.
  • ALL Middle and High Schools will begin on a two-hour delay

GBW Virtual Learning Schedule for Inclement Weather (10:30 - 3:15pm Bell Schedule)

  • 10:30am- 12:00 Instructional Block
  • 12:00- 12:30- Lunch Time
  • 12:30 - 2:15 Instructional Block
  • 2:15 - 2:45 Asynchronous Specials
  • 2:45 - 3:15 Recess
  • ***Teachers will share more specific details in Schoology regarding the instructional schedule.

No School December 20 - December 31 School office will be closed School will resume on Monday, January 3, 2022 1. Principal's Message

Teachers and students have been working hard all year so we could finish the 2021 year strong.  This pandemic has placed many obstacles in the way of learning, and we are so proud of all of the wonderful in-person learning that we have accomplished this year!  As we step into winter break, we hope all of you; students, families, and staff, find quality time to help make special memories with your families.

As we kick-off the 2022 portion of the school year, please know that Mr. Cook and I are determined to continue to build on the excellence that we have come to expect from GBW.  As you are reflecting on the 2021 year, if you find any areas of our school that you would like to help us improve please let us know.  We are constantly looking for ways to improve and we welcome your student / family feedback as we work collaboratively to better serve our GBW community.

Have a wonderful and relaxing winter break!

Sincerely,

Mr. Blount & Mr. Cook

2. Returning To School After Quarantine Some Students May Now Return from Quarantine After Seven Days

CDC guidance allows for a reduction of the student quarantine period to seven days “when diagnostic testing resources are sufficient and available.” With FCPS now offering drive-through diagnostic testing at six sites across the county, in addition to the many alternative ways to access COVID-19 testing, FCPS is now providing the option for students who have been exposed to COVID-19 to return to school and in-person activities after seven days.

If your child is quarantined due to exposure at school, please keep them at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met:

  • Seven days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide both: a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken on day five of quarantine or later, as well as a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school dates; or
  • 10 days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide a copy of the FCPS pause letter indicating the return to school dates; or
  • 14 days of quarantine and you provide a copy of the clearance letter (SARA-Alert) from the health department.

If your child is quarantined due to exposure outside of the school, please contact the school as soon as possible and you will receive a Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS. The timeline for quarantine return begins when you alert the school. Keep your child at home until one of the following quarantine periods is met

  • Seven days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide both: a negative COVID-19 test (Rapid Antigen or PCR) taken on day five of quarantine or later, as well as a copy of the Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS indicating the return to school dates; or
  • 10 days of quarantine, your child remains symptom-free AND you provide a copy of the Return Letter for Exposures Outside of FCPS indicating the return to school dates (you must contact your school to request the letter at the beginning of the quarantine period); or
  • 14 days of quarantine and you provide a copy of the clearance letter (SARA-Alert) from the health department.

The above options only apply to a student returning to in-person learning and school-sponsored activities. Other organizations, such as SACC, may have different requirements for return.

We continue to balance the need for students to have a high-quality in-person learning experience with student and staff safety. By adhering to our layered prevention strategies and increasing vaccination rates, we are all doing our part to keep schools safe. Please email our School Public Health/COVID Case Manager Kay Billman with any questions you may have at [email protected]

If you would like your child to purchase items at the Book Fair, please review your student’s wish list and the virtual fair.  Decide on a budget with your child (do not forget to account for sales tax).  You can send cash or check, but the easiest and safest way for kids to shop is with eWallet.

Please click here to set up eWallet

About Book Fair eWallet

Give your child a safe, cashless way to shop the Book Fair. This digital payment option can be used at the in-school Book Fair or online at the Virtual Book Fair, where you'll discover an expanded selection of over 5,000 products.

How It Works
  • Create an account for each child
  • Add funds...
  • ...or invite family and friends to contribute
  • Shop the Book Fair
  • Spend unused funds online or fund an eWallet for your next Fair!

After the Fair, remaining eWallet funds are not returned to a credit card but instead, become a gift card balance that can be used online with Scholastic or to fund an eWallet for a future Book Fair. Be sure to sign in with the same email used to create the eWallet.

Help the teachers buy books for their classroom libraries!

Teachers love the Book Fair, too! Please consider donating money to your child’s teacher’s eWallet account. The teachers will be able to use the money to buy books from the Book Fair or the online store for their classroom libraries.

Click here to get links to the teacher’s eWallet funds.  The list is in alpha order by teacher's last name.

When you click on the teacher's link, you will see the teacher’s first name.  You can contribute as much as you want and the teacher will get an email informing them of your donation.

If you have any questions, contact Sharon Wilhelm at [email protected].

2. Veterans Day

Good afternoon families,

My name is Katie Musitani and I am one of the ESOL teachers here at Greenbriar West Elementary.  This year I had the honor of working with some local businesses to say a big “Thank You” to our Active Duty and Veteran families here at GBW.   As an Army mom, I know the struggles and joys our families go through.  Veterans Day is a day to celebrate the sacrifices our Veterans and their families have made to protect us and our freedoms. I had the pleasure of speaking with John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting and he has sent you a wonderful message of “Thanks” for everything you do.  Please enjoy the mini concert by clicking on the link below.

3. GBW Book Fair Starts Tomorrow!

Please visit the GBW Book Fair Homepage (The links to the Online Fair and Virtual Book Fair will work starting Friday, November 12th):

https://www.scholastic.com/bf/greenbriarwestlibrary

Students will preview the fair and create wish lists tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday morning!

This year we will not be having a family night. Students can begin shopping at a convenient time for their class between Tuesday, November 16th - Friday, November 19th.

If you have any questions, contact Sharon Wilhelm at [email protected].

4. Handicapped Parking/ Kiss & Ride Safety Reminders

Dear Parents, we recently advocated for our students with physical needs to have special handicapped parking spaces added to our parking lot near the K&R lanes, and thankfully the county has added a wonderful parking area for cars that need handicapped access.  Some of our families that park in these spaces have students that require wheel chairs and a lot of adult supervision to safely transition from their cars to our building.  Recently we have struggled to safely transition our students with physical needs into our building because other parents are parking in our handicapped parking spaces rather than waiting through our K&R lines.

Parents, please respect these parking spaces and only park in these spaces if you need a handicapped parking space as identified by the Virginia DMV.  This will help our families who need these spaces so they can more safely transition our students with physical disabilities into the building.

5. PTA News Duct Tape Mr. Blount!

Students at GBW will have the opportunity to duct tape Mr. Blount in the main hallway this Friday, Nov. 12, from 11a.m.-12p.m.!

Many thanks to families who joined the PTA.

If you haven’t already, here's the link to register: https://gbwpta.ptboard.com/formvw?store=1784&form=8.

If you are interested in substitute teaching, you can set parameters for the days you are available, the grade levels you would like to teach, or the schools where you want to assist. We hope you have a wonderful 4-day weekend with your children!  Teachers will be working hard over the next few Teacher Workdays to get caught up on grading, planning, finalizing progress reports, and conducting parent teacher conferences.  Friday, October 29 is the last day of 1st quarter and we will be starting 2nd quarter on Wednesday, November 3.  We hope that your families find some time to connect in a meaningful way over this 4-day weekend that helps to bring your family closer together.

This is also a great time for families to sit down and reflect with students on the successes of first quarter and also to consider some of the challenges.  As you are discussing these successes and challenges with your children, please know that we at GBW are happy to partner with families to better support all of our students.  In addition to the parent teacher conferences you may have already scheduled, feel free to reach out to the Principals or our Wellness Team to schedule a meeting to share successes and challenges your children or family might be experiencing.  We are here for you, and would be more than happy to schedule a meeting with your family.
