Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. Schools monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education.

FCPS Risk Prevention Series: Suicide Prevention – Supporting Your Child February 25, 2025 10 - 11:30 a.m.

This session will equip caregivers with the knowledge and skills to identify signs of suicidal ideation in their children and respond effectively to these crises. Caregivers will learn how to respond if they learn or observe that their child may be experiencing thoughts of suicide. This session will provide practical tools and strategies to help caregivers navigate these challenging situations with compassion and confidence.

2025-26 Kindergarten Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2025, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2025, please complete this form and return it by January 31, 2025. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Greenbriar West families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2025-2026 school year. Please email the completed form to Patty Li at [email protected]. We thank you in advance for returning the form by January 31, 2025.

Online Registration for 2025-2026 School Year

We are excited to announce that Online Registration for the 2025-2026 school year will open on January 21, 2025. Both new and returning (re-enrolling) families can use our Online Registration (OLR) system to register students entering Kindergarten (00) through 12th grade for the upcoming academic year. Also starting this year the 2025-2026 packet includes an updated Pre-Kindergarten experience registration form. DIT is excited to now provide support for digital student registration across all grade levels in the OLR system, please encourage your incoming families to fill out the digital registration forms. The IT FASTeam will provide training for school staff on new features during the week of January 13.

The Welcome to Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) Online Registration link will soon be available on your school's website. It will provide families with the information to utilize this convenient registration tool. Parents and guardians can still register students

Returning this Spring to GBW: Girls on the Run (Grades 3-6 Girls) Let Me Run (Grades 4-6 Boys)

These clubs can happen at GBW thanks to volunteers like YOU!

Both programs help students grow physically and socially. Students will run and complete lessons on things like why our words matter, the importance of friendships, and how to believe in ourselves. Both organizations are national non-profits and provide coach training, curriculum, and materials needed for lessons!

Let Me Run is a 7 week, 2x a week commitment, also in the spring, but exact dates to be determined.

Girls on the Run is a 10 week, 2x a week commitment, starting the week of March 3rd and ending mid-May.

Let Me Run will be held in the morning, and the committed coach is also flexible on the days of the week.

Girls on the Run has typically been in the afternoon, and the committed coach is flexible on what days of the week.

Virginia's Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE.

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.

Techstravaganza at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology

Techstravaganza is a free, public, hands-on STEM activity fair for elementary and middle school students in Northern Virginia. In previous years, we've hosted more than 4,500 students and 70 labs presenting STEM activities. Our exhibitors range from TJHSST clubs and our own TWIST volunteers to organizations like NASA SCaN, Art of Problem Solving, George Mason University, American Society of Naval Engineers, and the National Air and Space Museum. This year, we will be holding the 21st annual Techstravaganza on Saturday, May 17, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM at TJHSST.

Admission is free and there will be food concessions for sale.

Extend your artwork all the way to the edge of the paper. No white border!
The artwork must include the following: “Greenbriar West Elementary”, “2024-2025” and the theme “Growing Knowledge, Rooted in Kindness” in bold, clear, and neatly done lettering.
All TEXT must be kept within the 7 ¾” x 10” interior parameter of the paper. This includes your name.
Write your name neatly in the lower right corner (within the interior parameter).
Complete the entry form at the bottom of this flyer and attach it to the back of your artwork.

You can use markers, crayons, paint, or colored pencils, but outline your letters and images in black, like a coloring book, so that they stand out. Bold and bright colors work best; light, soft colors do not always print well. No 3-D artwork.

Please ensure that your artwork depicts the theme – if it does not it will not be considered. There will be one winner for the front cover, one winner for the back cover, with runners-up placed throughout the yearbook.

Sixth Grade Sexual Harassment Lessons in January

Fairfax County Public Schools want to make sure everyone feels safe and respected at school. To support this priority, two lessons were developed for sixth graders about sexual harassment. These lessons teach what sexual harassment is and how to stop it from happening. Students will learn what to do if they or a friend are being bothered in this way. The lessons also explain how schools help students who are being harassed so they can feel comfortable learning again. School counselors teach these two lessons as part of their counseling curriculum in January 2025.

Parents and guardians may choose to opt their child out of the two sixth-grade lessons on the topic of sexual harassment. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative instruction. Every effort is made to foster respect for family choice. Students will be included in the two sexual harassment lessons unless a parent or guardian completes an opt-out form. Please complete this opt-out form by January 6, 2025.

Formed Families Forward is pleased to offer a new training for parents and caregivers to boost family safety and wellness as you prepare for all of the excitement and disruptions of your children’s break from school and their expectations for winter holiday celebrations. Join us for an interactive workshop and get new strategies for managing the winter break and for starting the new year strong!

Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions 6th Grade

Our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. We will survey students in grades 6, as well as classroom instructors and staff, beginning in January 2025. The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.

The student survey will be completed between January 6-February 28, 2025. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous. No one, including teachers and administrators, will know how your child answered the survey questions. You will not have access to your child’s survey answers. You may preview the questions asked in the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurveyDCJS .

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Please note that there are questions about topics that may be sensitive to some, including questions about bullying, mental health, and suicide. This is a great time to talk to your child about these important issues. All students in your child’s grade level are eligible to participate in the survey. The survey is voluntary, and you and/or your child can decide they prefer not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please complete this form by December 20, 2024.

The Virginia School Survey results are provided to the school around the end of the school year. You can find survey results for your school and division here: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey. The results are used by the school, the division, and the state to identify strengths and to address relevant needs to improve learning environments for your child as well as students across the state.

Let’s achieve our goal of having 250 members of the GBW PTA! We are currently at 247 members. The 3 classes with the highest percentage of membership will be announced as soon as we reach our 250-member goal and will receive a popsicle party. Joining PTA doesn’t mean you have to volunteer any or at all! Help out if you want to, when you want to, or just simply help our PTA budget out by joining for $15-$20.

Design the 2024-2025 GBW Yearbook Cover!

Submit your artwork on a standard 8 ½” x 11” sheet of printer paper.
Extend your artwork all the way to the edge of the paper. No white border!
The artwork must include the following: “Greenbriar West Elementary”, “2024-2025” and the theme “Growing Knowledge, Rooted in Kindness” in bold, clear, and neatly done lettering.
All TEXT must be kept within the 7 ¾” x 10” interior parameter of the paper. This includes your name.
Write your name neatly in the lower right corner (within the interior parameter).
Complete the entry form at the bottom of this flyer and attach it to the back of your artwork.

Winter Break Day Camps Fundraiser At Focus Family

Fairfax's BEST award-winning camps are teaming up with Greenbriar West to give GBW parents a special discount on our Winter Break Camps.

Each day camp is $50 (originally $75) and all the money goes to GBW PTA!

All day camps are from 7am to 6pm.

Dear GBW,

Mrs. Odom and I are writing to share that Bene Giglio will be retiring from Greenbriar West ES and Fairfax County Public Schools on Friday, December 20, 2024. Mrs. Giglio has proudly served our GBW community for 24 years and has worked for FCPS for 31 years. Mrs. Giglio, it has been inspiring to see your passion, excitement, and love for our students and love for music. The way you share your love of music with our students has helped countless students to discover their own musical talents and joy in performing music for audiences. Over the years, you have encouraged countless young musicians to discover their musical talents in ways that will last them a lifetime. You have been our students' best advocate to help modify our musical instruction and instruments in ways so that our students with physical disabilities can still experience the same joy that others experience in music. And best of all you have loved our students in special ways so that every student has felt seen, heard, and loved as a valuable member of our GBW family. We thank you for your service to our GBW students, staff, and community and we wish you the best in this next chapter of your life.

Principal's Message: Kiss 'n Ride: Get an Early Start

Due to winter’s arrival and inclement weather approaching, we have been experiencing an uptick in students arriving late to class via the Kiss and Ride line and we would like to reinforce our morning Kiss and Ride procedures.

Arrival Times and Protocols:

8:50 – 9:20 a.m. GBW doors will be open for student arrival and the Kiss and Ride line will be open. Students that arrive early before 9:05 a.m. will wait in the gym until 9:05 when the first bell rings

. ***For Safety Concerns, please do not drop-off students

at school prior to 8:50 a.m.

Scheduled Supervision by our staff begins at 8:50am.
9:05 a.m. All classrooms are open for instruction and students waiting in the gym are dismissed to homeroom class.

***Please note that most classes start their morning routines at 9:05 a.m. and our goal is to get students to class and situated prior to the 9:20 a.m. late bell.

9:20 a.m. Late bell rings and the Kiss and Ride Line closes. Students arriving after 9:20 a.m. must have a parent or guardian check them in at the front office.
