Student Survey for GBW

Though the beginning of the next school year may seem far away, we are already beginning our planning for classroom assignments for the 2024-2025 school year. To assist in this process, each year we like to provide families the opportunity to share some information about your child by completing the Student Survey Form.  Please note that we do not accept requests for a particular teacher.  Your feedback will be shared with the entire committee (admin, classroom teachers, counselors, support staff & specialists) when we collaboratively make our class placements.   When our committee makes our class placements, we will use a complex set of data including academic needs, social / emotional / behavioral needs, teacher feedback, and will also include parent feedback from this form.  Our promise to the community is that we will read and consider this feedback when making class placements so that we ensure all students are successful next year. Please complete this form no later than Friday, May 17th, 2024.  Any feedback received after this date will not be considered in our class placement meetings.

Spring SOL Testing Schedule

As we approach the month of May, we want to remind everyone about the upcoming SOL (Standards of Learning) testing for our Pandas. These assessments provide valuable insights into their progress and areas for growth.

Here are the testing dates for each grade level:

We encourage families to ensure that students are on time on the days of their testing. If you know your child is going to be late or absent on a testing date, please let their teacher know as soon as possible.

Let's rally together as a community to support our students as they tackle the SOL tests. Together, we can help them succeed and reach their full potential. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our schools.

Best wishes to all students participating in the SOL testing!

Principal's Message

Hope Pregozen Playground Ceremony, Friday April 25, 2024:

We had a wonderful turnout for the ceremony to honor Hope Pregozen. Special thanks to those who contributed their time to the planning and execution of such a wonderful event for Hope’s honor and dedication.

Hope started working for Greenbriar West ES in October 2015 when she was hired as a Public Health Teaching Assistant.  For seven years, Hope faithfully served our students in Fairfax County Public Schools as a Special Education Instructional Assistant and a Public Health Teaching Assistant.  Hope was one of our first Fairfax County teachers who was asked to return to the building during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  She bravely returned to her instructional assistant teaching role like so many others during the pandemic.  On September 15, 2021, Hope Pregozen passed away due to medical complications caused by COVID-19.

When our Greenbriar West community learned that we had qualified for a playground addition to better meet the needs of our students with physical disabilities, several staff and community members approached me to see if we could dedicate the new playground addition in honor of Hope Pregozen.  We believe it is very fitting to see our new playground addition dedicated in honor of Hope Pregozen’s loving memory and service to our students with disabilities.  Most of Hope’s instructional career at Greenbriar West was helping to serve students with disabilities and our community has many fond memories of Hope playfully engaging with our students out on our playgrounds where she found creative ways to modify our play equipment to meet our student needs.

Hope was well known and loved by our staff members, as well as many of our students and their families.  Our Greenbriar West staff describe Hope as kind, compassionate, bubbly, always positive, committed to her work, committed to her faith, and so talented at supporting students with special needs. To say that Hope is deeply missed is an enormous understatement. Her positive impact on our students, staff, and community will always be remembered.  I personally have fond memories of Hope bringing so much joy and happiness to our students with her bubbles and her bubble machine.

As we formally dedicate this playground in honor of Hope Pregozen, my hope is that for many years to come, our students fully experience Hope’s spirit of joy, love, and happiness every time they play on The Hope Pregozen Playground.

On Tuesday afternoon, the PTA hosted an author visit from Mr. Stuart Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs shared his journey as a writer and author with our students in grades 3-6. A BIG Thank you to our PTA for organizing this successful event!

Dear GBW Families,

Our students had a blast on Monday viewing the partial solar eclipse.  Thank you to our PTA for funding the glasses so our students could view this amazing phenomenon.  This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States until 2044, so we are thrilled that our students had an opportunity to witness the event.

Thank you again PTA!

Fairfax County Health Department School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Dear GBW Families,

We are excited to announce that GBW has organized an educational opportunity for students to observe the partial Solar Eclipse on Monday (4/8/24). The Solar Eclipse is a fascinating celestial event where the moon will partially block the Sun's light, creating a partial eclipse.

Eid al-Fitr April 10

Eid al-Fitr, also known as small Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, and is celebrated during the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims congregate that morning for Eid prayers. It is a time of official receptions and private visits, when friends greet one another, presents are given, new clothes are worn, and the graves of relatives are visited. The most common way to wish someone a Happy Eid al-Fitr is Eid Mubarak, which means “blessed feast” (or festival).

Eagle Scout Project Installation of New Tree Bench

Thank you to Jimmy Moore for installing our new custom-built tree bench!  Jimmy is a Greenbriar West ES alumnus and now a Senior attending Chantilly High School.  He and his family wanted to give back to the local community while completing his Eagle Scout Project.  He chose GBW as a perfect place to give back.  The project began when Jimmy met with principals and the GBW PTA to design the bench build. Then he coordinated with a lumber yard to have the wood donated followed by helping supervise and lead his Scout Troop 7369 to build and install the tree bench.

During school hours, GBW will be using the bench for outdoor learning and dining.  Outside of school hours, we look forward to seeing our community enjoy Jimmy's bench for many years to come.

Thanks again Jimmy Moore and Scout Troop 7369 for giving back with your time and talents to our GBW community!

Sincerely,

Mr. Blount, Mr. Cook, and GBW PTA

Principal Evaluation Form for Mr. Blount

Dear GBW Families,

On Monday March 18, you will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form.  This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program and offers families an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include questions about how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, human resources leadership, organizational management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, professionalism within the school, and student academic progress.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. All written responses will be shared with me and the Region 5 Administrative team.  I know each of you are very busy, and it will be challenging to find time to complete one more survey for FCPS.  So please know how much I appreciate you taking time to make this a priority.

As a principal, I am constantly striving to be my best for our students, our teachers, our families, and our GBW community by reflecting on my principal leadership and improving my craft based on real data (like this survey data).  By completing this survey, you can help me to better understand areas of my leadership that are going well and other areas where I can grow.  My promise is that I will take time to carefully read your feedback, reflect on this feedback, and make plans for how I can better serve our students, our teachers, our families, and our GBW community.

Thank you so much for your time, and let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Andrew Blount

Principal

P.S. Please note this survey is different from the Family Engagement Survey that you may have taken 1-2 weeks ago.  So sorry for all the survey emails, and thanks again for your feedback.

Family Engagement Survey

Dear GBW Families,

Recently, you should have received an email from Fairfax County Public Schools regarding our Family Engagement Survey which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22.  These results will be reported out across the division to help school principals and school leaders to make informed decisions regarding each individual school.  At Greenbriar West, Mr. Cook and I will receive a detailed report that we will be sharing out with our teachers as part of our continuing plans for improvement.

We sincerely value this feedback, and our promise is we will read all the feedback results, and carefully consider how to use this feedback to improve our school and our community.  If you have time, please take a moment to take the family engagement survey by searching your email for this subject, “Your feedback matters! Complete our FCPS Family Engagement Survey”.

Thank you again for your feedback contributions and we look forward to hearing from our families.  If you are having trouble finding the survey or have any questions about the survey, you can find more resources and access the survey itself using this site: Family Engagement Survey

Sincerely,

Mr. Blount and Mr. Cook

Principal's message

Dear GBW, we have been monitoring and assessing our Kiss and Ride protocols to help make them safer, and we wanted to share some safety best practices to help improve the safety and efficiency of our Kiss and Ride line.  Please help us to keep our students, staff, and community safe by following these safety guidelines.

Kiss and Ride Safety Protocols and Best Practices:

  • Follow traffic patterns- please honor and follow the traffic pattern shown in the map below.
  • Parents and guardians stay in your car- the Kiss and Ride is specifically designed so that parents and guardians can safely stay in their car and not walk in the driving lane.  The staff and or student patrols can assist students with exiting the car and shutting the car door.  If you want to walk your child to our door, the Kiss and Ride is not a safe option for you. Instead, you should consider parking in the neighborhood and walk your child so that you do not disrupt the Kiss and Ride traffic.
  • Students exit car on sidewalk side- please ask your children to exit and enter your car from the sidewalk side.  It is a safer best practice to have students enter and exit your car from the sidewalk side so students are not walking in our Kiss and Ride lane.
  • Save handicapped parking spaces for those who need them- we have several students who require a handicapped parking space to safely access our building.  If you do not have a DMV issued handicapped parking permission, please save these spaces for our families that need this accommodation.
  • Do not pass cars in line- some cars have been reported passing cars in our Kiss and Ride line in an unsafe way.  If you are parking your car in our parking lot, please follow the traffic patterns until you can safely access your parking space without driving around cars in an unsafe manner.
  • Have children ready to exit- have your child prepare to unbuckle their seatbelt and have their materials ready to exit when you park in the Kiss and Ride line.  We do our best to keep our Kiss and Ride line moving efficiently so that all students can get to class on time and so families can get to their work on time as well.  Please help us to keep everyone on time by having your child ready to safely exit the car once you safely park in our Kiss and Ride line.

Thank you everyone for helping us to constantly reflect and improve upon our safety practices, and please let us know if you have any questions or other suggestions for improving safety.

Mr. Blount and Mr. Cook

Principals' message Lost & Found Update

In an effort to make room for new lost items we will be donating our current lost and found items in the near future. Our current lost and found is at maximum capacity and we need to make room for new lost items. We will keep these current lost and found items on display in our cafeteria until Friday, February 23rd. Students can access the lost and found at arrival, during lunch, and at dismissal.  Parents and guardians can also stop by before or after school to check for lost items. All lost and found items are in the cafeteria.

Our hope is that most items will be claimed by next Friday, and the remaining items will be donated to a local charity.  Also, this is a friendly reminder to label student belongings so we can more easily return lost items.

Ash Wednesday Beginning of Lent

Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting in many Western Christian denominations. It marks the beginning of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday derives its name from this practice.

Winter Music Concerts

The music department at Greenbriar West Elementary School put on a fantastic series of performances last week. All who attended, including our Superintendent Dr. Reid, enjoyed two evenings of beautiful music.

Each of our 5th and 6th grade band, chorus, and strings ensembles, along with the 4th grade strings, showcased their talents and progress over the past few months in a stellar set of performances.

The music programs at GBW have grown so large that they have had to separate their ensemble performances over two nights at neighboring Rocky Run Middle School. GBW is one of the smallest schools in FCPS, but you would never know it from their music ensemble membership! 83% of 4th graders, 81% of 5th graders, and 87% of 6th graders are involved in instrumental ensembles, and Chorus includes 50% of 5th graders and 55% of 6th graders!

The teachers at GBW attribute the success of their music programs largely due to the close collaboration of their music team, and the unwavering support of their administration in both scheduling and advocacy. The high enrollment in group music ensembles provides a strong sense of community and teamwork within the school.  Music makes a difference, and it shows at Greenbriar West!

Chantilly Strings & Band Day

Last Friday, 5th and 6th grade music students from all of the elementary schools in the Chantilly Pyramid were invited to participate in “Chantilly Strings and Band Day.” Rocky Run Middle School hosted Strings Day and Franklin Middle School welcomed students for Band Day. We had 48 strings students and 50 band students signed up to participate. All of the young musicians from various elementary schools practiced throughout the morning and preformed a full concert in the afternoon.  We are so proud of our GBW musicians for working hard to put on this amazing performance. Such a great experience for our students to actually be in the respective Middle Schools to learn from the extraordinary Music teachers we have in the Chantilly Pyramid.
